Lulea, Sweden
Elite Hotel
Katarina and her twin daughters picked us up from the hotel at 3:15 this afternoon. She took us to Kyrkbyn which is the church town. Sadly, this area was closed because it's Sunday. This town is in the Gammlastad part--or the Old Town (similar to Gamla Stan of Stockholm). The old houses still remain but are used mostly as summer cabins. People live in regular houses intermingled amongst them. Katarina also drove us by the house where they lived before they moved to their current home.
We drove around a bit more, seeing the different areas where we'll be visiting over the next few weeks. Eventually, we ran out of things to see and swung by the Maxi ICA (equivalent of the super Walmart or super Target). I picked up a few snacks to keep in my room so that we don't have to eat out quite as much during the week.
Then we picked up Katarina's other daughter from gymnastics practice and dropped the kids off at her very lovely house which is not far from the university where we will be during the beginning of next week. She then dropped us off at our hotel. I put away my groceries, and we headed down the street to the MAX. Max is the Swedish equivalent of McDonald's which, Katarina informs us, the Swedish people trust over McDonald's. The meat comes from Sweden and is tested for chemicals. It's very tasty. I had an original Max burger with some chili cheese bites on the side. The burger was quite tasty, better than McD's, I'd say. The chili cheese bites were basically the white cheese that you can get at Mexican restaurants with little bits of jalapenos. Tasty! Josh got the Macho Nacho burger which was a burger with guacamole, chips, and salsa on it. He said that it was also tasty. I don't have pictures of these as they look pretty much just like our hamburgers here in the US.
Now we're back the hotel for the evening. We have plans to meet Katarina in the morning just after 8 in order to go to the hospital for tomorrow's day of rotation work. We will be there for Monday and Tuesday.
And this is a view of the church and part of the park which is across the street from our hotel.
