Sweden Day 6 Part I: The Swedish Art of Tablet-Making

9 April 2010
Uppsala, Sweden
Tabletter (like musketeer, only spelled tabletter)

This morning, we followed two students during their tablet-making lab. This is much different from our Compounding Lab back at UT, as the Uppsala pharmacy students focus more on industry. The first step is to don fancy coveralls which keep the worker from getting dusty. Then the fun part begins. Lactose is weighed and added to the mixer. Once the ingredients are mixed, hot water is added. Then a humidity test is performed. The mixture should clump together like a snowball. Then the mixture is milled, dried, and milled again. A dryness test is performed at this stage. The remaining product is put in a blender with methylcellulose then magnesium stearate. Then the powder is ready to be pressed into tablets. The machine is adjusted to reach a specific tablet weight. Strength, friability, and disintegration tests are then performed on the tablets. After these tests meet with suitable results, the tablets can be dried and coated using a dye of the students' choice. The dye is dried by a hair-dryer like apparatus.
