Lulea, Sweden
Elite Hotel
post-Nyttag (post-night train =)
So we started the train off a little on the rocky side as there was some sort of foul up with the electricity that runs the train. That put us a bit behind, as we had to stop over in Uppsala to get the damage figured out. I guess there was none because we started back up again shortly thereafter. I don't know for sure because there were absolutely no English announcements on this train. I guess tourists don't usually travel this far north--at least not on the night train.
The train was packed because everyone flying north got bumped to the train. Josh and I were in compartments next to one another. He managed to get in the fun car with two sisters and their children. I was in a car with two people who live in Lulea and commute each week to central Sweden for work as well as three young people who were headed north to Kiruna (even farther north than Lulea) for a skiing vacation. This was a fun time, and Josh and I both made some new friends. I had a good time on the train with the exception that they turned the heat on and some kid got up at 6:00am and was talking loudly in the corridor...but I do so like trains, so it was still a good time.
Katarina picked us up from the Lulea Central station with two of her daughters and dropped us off at the hotel. We got to the hotel before our rooms were ready, so we got to eat at the complementary breakfast buffet. This breakfast buffet is very similar to the one back on Gamla Stan, but it has lox. Lox >>>> Herring, but that's a personal preference. Anyhow, I'm not sure how Josh and I are going to stay healthy when we eat like royalty every morning. Luckily, there's a gym here. We'll see how much that gets used, but I intend to try =)
Additionally, there is a laundry room here where we can do our own laundry. I've started on mine now. It's tough to figure out what's going on when every word is written in Swedish. I'm hoping my clothes get clean. If not, I guess I'll request a translator.
In other news, there is a lot of snow on the ground here. It's pretty cold, but not as cold as I expected. Katarina is picking us back up around 3:20pm to do a little tour of Lulea and talk about our stay here. I will probably post some pictures later when we return, as the snow makes everything very pretty.
My last dessert from the Konditori that I got for the road. Ate it this morning for breakfast. It was a Garbo Tarar. I think that's something to do with Greta Garbo, as she's Swedish. It was amaretto something-something. Quite delicious.
